Mapping Leadership
Lesson Name: Mapping Leadership
Description: Students will create an original work of art highlighting their journey in boat building and leadership development. Students will use images from their work on the boat and other art projects to create a collage-drawing picture that has small windows set in the background of the map image. The images should be sequenced in an order that makes sense with the growth and development of each individual. Making sure that blending, shading, and contrast in value are used in the image is important to developing interesting images. Make a small sketch of your idea to understand the overall design of your project. This project should be focused on your journey into leadership development. The art should reflect your growth and highlight important understandings when in this class. Take inspiration from real maps and learn from how they are organized to help create your design. You may use maps to trace how lines and spacing looks on a map if that will help. You may also use the images from our website to trace to add images in an inset style on the map drawing. Take time to label things on your map that reflect your growth and journey into leadership.
Objectives:
- understand how to create an original work of art
- understand how to correctly use a graphite pencil to create art
- understand how to correctly use value shading and blending to help improve the quality of the drawings
- understand how to develop a concept for the art project based on self reflection
- understand how to correctly use images from your journey combined with map imagery in a work of art
- understand how to represent a journey through visual images that highlights self reflection and growth as a leader

Collecting Pause Pendant
Lesson Name: Collecting Pause Pendant
Description: Create an original work of art by making a pendant is the main focus of this lesson. Taking time to plan out your pendant and the meaning you hold in the visual is important in the creation of the pendant. The pendant is a representation of your journey into being a strong leader. Design symbolism into your pendant to show your growth as a leader. Self-reflection of your journey should be included in your design. The thought process of representing your leadership ability in your pendant is important to the success of your pendant. Answering the question of: How is your collected leadership knowledge represented as a physical object? is an important aspect of the project. Leaders that take action are usually the leaders that are noted through out history as being important. Before leaders take action there needs to be a moments of pause to make sure that you are headed the correct direction, using the correct tools, and using the correct amount of energy. Collecting those small moments through reflection is as important as taking action as a leader. Using the “pause button” in leadership moments can help increase your effectiveness as a leader. Creating a pendant that reminds you to pause and collect your thoughts then take action is the main concept of this lesson. Make a sketch of your idea before you start working with wood. Use the scrap pieces of wood from our boat building to create your pendant. When done sawing larger sections use the small carving tools to add details. Then sand all surfaces smooth. Drill a hole for the cord to attach. Finally, apply a finish over the wood, let dry then add the cord.
Objectives:
- understand how to create an original work of art
- understand how to correctly use a wood glue, clamps, coping saw, wood carving tools andsand paper to create art
- understand how to correctly use wood carving tools to improve the quality of the pendant
- understand how to develop a concept for the art project based on self reflection
- understand how to correctly use form and design in a work of art
- understand how to represent collected knowledge in a physical object
Vocabulary:
